The 80/10/10 Career Triage: How to Protect Your Career from AI

Most careers won’t die slowly. They’ll get steamrolled.

In the early 1800s, most Americans were farmers. Today, hardly anyone is.

What Happened to Farming?

Simple: farming changed.

Machines replaced muscle. Big machines took over the hard work. Big farms gobbled up small ones. Many farmers either moved to the city or found ways to upgrade – managing bigger farms, inventing better ways to grow food, or selling fancy tractors that practically drove themselves.

Back then, farmers split into three groups. I call this The Career Triage:

  • About 80% got wiped out. Machines and new methods made most old jobs disappear.
  • About 10% leveled up. They became farm managers, business experts, and logistics pros.
  • About 10% found brand-new farming jobs. Drones, hydroponics, indoor farms – things nobody even dreamed of when people were still milking cows by hand.

Technology always creates new jobs – but it also wipes out old ones. Farmers who lost their jobs found other work – but mostly in other industries, not farming.

Today, most careers are heading toward the same kind of Career Triage – thanks to AI.

It won’t happen overnight. It’ll happen slowly – and then all at once.

Understanding the AI Career Triage

AI is the new tractor.

Some jobs might be safe. Like judges. Nobody wants a robot making life-or-death decisions (at least, not yet).

But for most jobs? The Career Triage is coming.

What This Means for You:

  • If your job is repetitive or routine, it’s at risk.
  • If your job is creative, strategic, or hard to automate – you’re in the 20%.

The goal is simple: move up or move sideways.

Let’s zoom in on one industry that’s already feeling the Career Triage: software development.

How AI Will Impact Coding

Coding is feeling the Career Triage faster than almost any other profession.

  • 80% of basic coding work will be automated. Building cookie-cutter websites, squashing boring bugs, cranking out routine code – AI is already scooping them up.
  • 10% of coders will level up. They’ll be the architects and tech leads who plan and guide entire systems. They’ll use AI as a power tool, not see it as competition.
  • 10% will create brand-new jobs. Roles like AI prompt engineers, AI security experts, quantum software developers, and more. Some of these jobs still sound like science fiction – but companies are already hiring for them.

The future of coding won’t be about typing – it’ll be about thinking.

The AI tractors are already plowing through the code farms. Better to learn to drive one than get flattened.

Coding is just one example. Every industry will go through its own Career Triage sooner or later.

Final Thought

Farming didn’t disappear. It just got smarter.

Your career won’t disappear either – if you get smart about how you grow it.

The tractors are already running. The AI is already writing. The future is already knocking.

Don’t wait to be part of the 80% that gets left behind.

Your goal is simple: move into the 20% – the people who level up or create something new. The ones who thrive instead of just survive.

The future isn’t waiting. Neither should you.
